  Introduction

The Pioneer magazine was first published in 1943 and continued to be published until the Corp's disbandment in 1993. These magazines provide enormous information about the Corps during these years. A full set of these magazines are held by myself, the Association HQ and at the Royal Logistics Corps Museum at Deepcut.

During the fifty years the magazine had 180 issues published. It started off as a magazine for 30 Group Pioneer Corps in the Faroe Islands and was sold for 50 ore a copy.

The first edition sold 4,000 copies and sold out straight away. The magazine eventually became so popular that it was written for the whole Royal Pioneer Corps. Reading through some of those early editions it is obvious that they experienced many difficulties including shortage of materials, paper etc. In fact it was felt at one stage that Issue No 4 (December 1943) might have to be the last but by sheer persistence, a rallying of forces and Issue No 5 appeared - but this in August 1945.

Incidentally No 4 was the first from the press of Sherren and Son. It was the intention in those days that from the efforts of 30 Group with their magazine 'The Pioneer' a Pioneer Corps magazine would eventually materialise.
This aim was achieved by the perseverance, energy and courage in the face of adversity - true pioneering.

I had planned to get every single issue scanned in and available online, but space and time would not make this feasible. Instead we have resorted to scanning the text out of every issue and making it available to search through - this however will not be online for quite sometime and will be extremely useful for finding out about past events and old friends etc. However Major Starling has kindly supplied me with an index of the Corps magazines up to Issue 150, which has been included as a download at the end of this introduction.

All the past memorable occasions from the magazines are online in their entirety e.g. Freedom Parade etc. All the front covers of the magazines (except issues where covers remained the same) are online. I have scanned in the very first edition of the magazine from 1943 and it is available to download, in the downloads section.

A quote from a past Editor, Capt L Russell, in referring to the pioneer magazine
"It (the magazine) is a meeting place - on paper - for all Pioneers."

A quote from the current Editor, Norman Brown
"It (the pioneer website) is a meeting place - on the internet - for all Pioneers."

If there is anything at all you would like to see from the magazines e.g. old pictures, articles etc than drop me an email telling me roughly the year and month and I shall do my best in finding it for you. Likewise if there is anything
you would like to see included from the magazines online than let me know !
